Relaxing Music for Kids Is Vital

Music has a unique the characteristic in that we all have the experience of what it means to us personally. It is very rare to find someone that has never heard music before. Additionally, we all have an emotional relationship with music. This makes music critical in our lives because it has the power to influence our emotions. How many of us use energetic music to workout? Or a sad song to work through out feelings? Or perhaps soft, classical music to study or relax? I think this is something we can all relate to. That is why I feel relaxing music for kids is key to a successful learning environment.

The link between the emotions and music has been well-established. Given the power of this link, music has the unique capability to be an extremely useful tool for many situations. One of those situations is as an effective stress management tool. This is particularly useful for children.

According to Jane Collingwood, “Listening to certain types of music can have a tremendously relaxing effect on our minds and bodies, especially slow, quiet classical music. This type of music can have a beneficial effect on our physiological functions, slowing the pulse and heart rate, lowering blood pressure, and decreasing the levels of stress hormones. Music, in short, can act as a powerful stress management tool in our lives.”

Lullabies for Babies and Children

In my years as a music therapist at a special needs pre-school, one of the key moments of the day was nap time. Resting is vital for all children, however for special needs children, this is especially important. Often times, children that are dealing with certain disabilities find it difficult to stay calm and rest. This proves quiet time and nap time to be a challenge.

As you can imagine, this can have cumulative negative effects on the child. A child that is not rested finds it even more difficult to focus and learn. It can make them more irritable and disruptive during class time. Delaying rest at the proper time can cause the child to fall asleep at inconvenient times of the day. This make sit difficult for teacher and other students to learn effectively.

A calm and relaxing atmosphere can provides the best scenario for a child to be peaceful. To lower their energy levels and relax. Music, as it does for adults, is a perfect way to help this process along. Playing soft music in the background can remove other distractions and let the child focus on resting.
